BRUSSELS — A man armed with a knife was arrested by the Belgian police outside the Belgian prime minister’s office in Brussels on Monday morning.

“A man with a knife has been overpowered by the military police,” a spokesperson for Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said on Monday. “The man has been transferred to the police station. The military police officers were not injured in the incident,” he added.

Local police confirmed the arrest, saying that the man had threatened military personnel stationed at the site, but according to local media they have not yet determined the man’s motives.

Barend Leyts, the prime minister’s communications director, said De Croo was “shocked by the incident.”

“We would like to express our sincere thanks to the military police officers. We are closely monitoring the situation together with the police. We are relieved that no one was injured in the incident,” De Croo said via his communications director.
