A Dhaka court issued an arrest warrant for British Labour MP Tulip Siddiq over corruption charges.
Siddiq is the niece of former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina, who resigned following widespread protests against her rule in August 2024, after a total of 20 years helming the country.
Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission is investigating whether Siddiq illegally received a plot of land in the country’s capital in a wider probe over her aunt’s regime.
The Dhaka court issued arrest warrants for 50 individuals including Hasina, Siddiq’s mother and other family members, Bangladesh’s state news agency reported.
A spokesperson for Siddiq said that the claims are “completely false” and “politically motivated.”
Siddiq resigned from her position as Treasury minister in January amid pressure over the ongoing corruption investigation.
The U.K. prime minister’s standards adviser, Laurie Magnus, said at the time that there was “no evidence of improprieties,” according to the BBC.
