Ukrainian president’s visit to Helsinki comes at a potentially defining moment in Russia’s war on his country.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will visit Finland on Wednesday to meet top leadership in Helsinki, at a delicate point in Kyiv’s defense against Russia’s full-scale invasion.
“Europe must be at the negotiating table, and everything related to Europe’s security should be decided together with Europe,” Zelenskyy wrote Tuesday, announcing the visit, which will include first lady Olena Zelenska.
Zelenskyy’s meeting with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, along with other senior officials, will come after a much-anticipated phone call between United States President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, as they hammer out Ukraine’s future without input from Kyiv or Europe.
In Helsinki, Zelenskyy and Stubb will discuss Finland’s support for Ukraine and steps to end Russia’s war of aggression, according to a statement by the Finnish president’s office.
The Finnish ministers of finance, defense and foreign affairs are also expected to attend the meeting. Zelenskyy will also meet Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and companies in the defense industry.
Last week, Finland — which has a border with Russia — announced it would provide a new €200 million military aid package to Ukraine.
